When we return to Kalvskinnet on January 16 we will begin our Cross-Curricular Film Project in full force. This project will combine Norwegian, English, Art and Music. We will give you more details in class, but here are some basic expectations:

Create a film from 5 to 15 minutes in length
Write a manuscript and create a storyboard
Include a musical element from 2-3 minutes long
Create a cover design for your film
You may choose to make the film in either Norwegian or English; however, if the film is in English, the song will need to be in Norwegian, or if you choose to make the film in Norwegian, the song will need to be in English.
The deadline will likely be Friday, February 17

"Uncommonly Useful: The Comma

There's nothing much to punctuating a sentence, really, beyond a little comma sense. Get the commas right, and the rest will fall into place.

Yeah, yeah, I hear what you're saying. What's a comma or two - or three? How can something so small, so innocuous, be important? Well, that attitude can get you tossed into grammatical purgatory. You don't believe it? Take a look:

Cora claimed Frank planned the murder.

Without commas, the finger of guilt points to Frank. But add a pair of commas, and Cora becomes the suspect:

Cora, claimed Frank, planned the murder.

Here's another pair of examples with completely different meanings:

Augie quit saying he was looking for another job.

Augie quit, saying he was looking for another job.

In the first sentence, Augie quit talking; in the second, he quit his job.

The lesson: Don't take commas for granted. They're like yellow traffic lights. If you ignore one, you could be in for a bumpy ride.

Most problems with commas have to do with dividing a sentence into parts - larger parts like clauses (each with its own subject and verb), or smaller ones like items in a series. Commas are also used to interrupt a sentence and insert another thought. Here's how to get out of some of the most comma complications.

Long and Short Division

Use a comma to separate big chunks (clauses) of a sentence with and between them. Tina hadn't left the city in months, and by Friday she was climbing the walls. If there's no and in between, use a semicolon instead: Tina hadn't left the city in months; by Friday she was climbing the walls.
Use commas to separate a series of things or actions. She packed a toothbrush, a blow-dryer, her swimsuit, and her teddy bear. She finished packing, paid some bills, ate a few Oreos, and watered the plants.

NOTE: The final comma can be left out. It's a matter of taste. But since it's absence can sometimes change your meaning, and since there's no harm in leaving it in, my advice is to stick with using the final comma.

As I Was Saying

Use commas before and after the names of people you're talking to: "Good-bye, Mom. Dad, be good, " she said, and hung up the phone. You can skip the comma before the name if all that precedes it is and ("And Mom, don't worry") or but ("But Dad, you promised").
Use commas before or after a quotation: "Let's see," said Tina. Or: Tina said, "Let's see." But don't use a comma after a quotation that ends with an exclamation point or a question mark: "Have I forgotten anything?" she wondered. "Sunscreen!" she exclaimed.

Let Me Interrupt

Use a comma after an introductory phrase if a pause is intended: As usual, she checked to make sure the stove was turned off. Of course, it always was. You see, Tina was a bit compulsive.
Use commas around an aside - information that could just as well go in parentheses. Her upstairs neighbor, the one without the tattoos, promised to collect her mail.
Use commas around which clauses: The airport bus, which was usually on time, never came. So she took a taxi which cost her an arm and a leg.

But don't use commas around that clauses: The bus that she had planned to take never came, so she grabbed the first taxi that she saw."

Here is another grammar tip. This one comes from one of the most renowned grammar books of the 20th Century: The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White (4th edition, 2000).

"Do not join independent clauses with a comma.

If two or more clauses grammatically complete and not joined by a conjunction are to form a single compound sentence, the proper mark of punctuation is a semicolon.

It is, of course, equally correct to write each of these as two sentences, replacing the semicolons with periods.

A comparison of the three forms given above will show clearly the advantage of the first. It is, at least in the examples given, better than the second form because it suggests the close relationship between the two statements in a way that the second does not attempt, and better than the third because it is briefer and therefor more forcible. Indeed this simple method of indicating relationship between statements is one of the most useful devices of composition. The relationship, as above, is commonly one of cause and consequence.

An exception to the semicolon rule is worth noting here. A comma is preferable when the clauses are very short and alike in form, or when the tone of the sentence is easy and conversational.

In Monday Morning's English class we're going to be doing some much-needed grammar work. To prepare, here's a grammar tip from one of my favorite grammar books, Woe is I: The Grammarphobe's Guide to Better English in Plain English by Patricia T. O'Conner (1996).

"Semi-Avoidance: The Unloved Semicolon (;)

The semicolon is one of the most useful but least used punctuation marks. For whatever reason, many of us avoid it. Maybe it intimidates us; it shouldn't. (See, wasn't that easy?) If a comma is a yellow light and a period is a red light, the semicolon is flashing red - one of those lights you drive through after a brief pause. It's for times when you want something stronger than a comma but not quite so final as a period. Here's when to use it.

Use a semicolon to separate clauses when there's no and in between: Andy's toupee flew off his head; it sailed into the distance.
Use semicolons to separate items in a series when there's already a comma in one or more of the items: Fred's favorite things were his robe, a yellow chenille number from Barneys; his slippers; his overstuffed chair, which had once been his father's; murder mysteries, especially those by Sue Grafton; and single-malt Scotch."

Happy New Year, Year 11!

It's New Year's Day, holiday break is almost over, and it's time to start thinking about Social Studies again.

First order of business: Please bring your laptops to school on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. This is because you will be working on a Social Studies project. Here are the details:

Stalin "Man or Monster" Presentation

You will create a presentation that answers the question: Was Stalin a man or a monster?

Task #1: Finish the reading

If you have not done so already, make sure you have read all of Section 3 (pages 80-127) in your textbook.

Task #2: Make an informed decision about Stalin based on evidence.

Was Stalin the right leader for the USSR at the time? Did he bring progress to the USSR or was he simply a mass murderer? Were his actions justified? Was he good for the USSR or a disaster? Read through your evidence (class notes, the textbook, the Stalin videos we watched which were posted on the blog a while back, etc.) and make your decision.

Task #3: Decide what to include in your presentation.

You will not be able to include every piece of information about Stalin; it will be too long. Try to include the most important pieces of evidence that support your conclusions, rather than every small detail.

Task #4: Decide how you will present your ideas.

You can present your ideas as a PowerPoint, a Prezi presentation, a poster, a video - or other ideas which you may have.

Presentation Guidelines:

Your presentation should be approximately 5 minutes long.
You may work alone or with a partner.
You should have a clear answer to the question which is well supported by evidence from history.You do not need to present the opposite view, however, you may wish to discredit it!
Your presentation will be assessed according to content and delivery. The clarity of your conclusion and the evidence you choose to support it will be most important.
Time - You will have one double lesson and two single lessons in school to prepare. Study hall time should also be used for this. In total (including lesson time), no more than 6 hours should be used on this project.

You should now be finalising your work experience arrangements. Make sure you have everything in place and have completed the information on the google doc. by the last day of term (Thursday 22nd December).

Wednesday 21st December is the school church service at 12 noon. We will leave from school together at some point in the morning, but you will be dismissed directly from the service at around 1pm. Please inform the office as soon as possible if you are unable to attend the service for whatever reason.

Thursday 22nd will be the last day of school. We will have normal lessons until 1pm when we will have some celebrations and treats. School will end at the normal time.

Now that we have completed the novel Animal Farm, I want to highly recommend another book by George Orwell titled 1984. This book takes many of the thought-provoking ideas from Animal Farm and takes them a step further.

I actually read this book for the first time in the actual year of 1984, when I was about 15 years old, and I loved it! But don't just take my word for it, read this review from Teen Ink Magazine:

"Think about the environment that surrounds you while you read this review. You are probably in a safe, reasonably comfortable place.

Now, if you were in the world of 1984, you’d be reading this surrounded by telescreens that constantly watch you while announcing false but true news bulletins, posters with a moustached man known as Big Brother, and beetle-like workers. That is, of course, if you are not at home, which would be a small, more-or-less empty apartment with a telescreen to see your every move.

Originally published in 1949, the novel takes place in the super state Oceania, where the fascist, totalitarian, socialist, and omnipotent government structure, Ingsoc (English Socialism), rules the land. Ingsoc encourages the system of thought known as doublethink (“the power of holding two contradictory beliefs simultaneously, and accepting both of them”) and thus creates the three slogans that summarize the world of 1984: “War is Peace,” “Freedom is Slavery,” “Ignorance is Strength.”

The protagonist is Winston Smith, a man who thinks and remembers too much for his own good. Little by little, he realizes that things are not as they should be and they should change. With this idea, a strong instinct, and an ethical mind, he hazards his life - the life of “the last man in Europe.”

An extremely moving, well-written, interesting, anti-totalitarian, and quite scary book, 1984 takes first place in my book rankings. And with Orwell’s brilliant mind and his succinct, vivid style, you can’t go wrong. But don’t think this is a fun read. Your Task: To write a fictional narrative.

All narratives tell about an event or series of events (some type of conflict is best), after which something or somebody is changed. Your fictional narrative should contain the following elements: A character (who?) to whom something happens (what?), in some place (where?), at some time (when?), for some reason (why?), told from a particular perspective (how?). It should ideally have a beginning, a middle and an end.

Though this is a fictional story, it is quite alright to include real experiences from your own life.

I have simplified the rubric for this assignment (below). Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Temaet bør belyses fra flere sider, slik at du får diskutert det på en god måte i oppgaven din. Science Trip

On Friday 23rd September the middle school students will visit the Science event in the town centre. They will have a chance to look around the exhibits and experience first hand demonstrations and experiments while completing an assignment.

We will leave school around 12.30 pm and travel by bus to the town centre. We will remain at the exhibition until 2.45pm when the students will be dismissed directly from the event.

Normal school lessons will go ahead during the morning.

Please ensure that students come well prepared for the weather
